Project: WY NPS YELL 10(26) Gardner River High Bridge

Western Federal Lands is reaching out to the contracting community to assess industry capabilities and preferences so we can design a constructable and biddable plan for a bridge rehabilitation project in the Western US. The plans are early in development and construction is anticipated to begin in late spring of 2025.

The scope of the project includes lead based paint removal requiring full containment, repainting the structure, miscellaneous repair of concrete and steel structural elements and placement of a deck overlay. The bridge is a steel truss structure built in the 1930’s and last rehabilitated in 1970’s. The bridge is approximately 1000 feet long, approximately 180 feet tall at its midpoint over a narrow river and has three steel support towers that will also be repainted.

We are soliciting contractor input to determine construction access requirements, equipment capabilities and staging needs:

  1. Construction of a temporary access road and a 60-80 foot long temporary bridge to access the base of the three towers is being considered. What equipment types, sizes and limitations (specifically temporary construction access road grades and widths) should be considered by the design team?

  2. How large of a staging area is needed for contractor equipment (on the deck, at either end, and the base)?

  3. If access was only provided “top down” (no access to the base of the towers) how would your approach to the work change? How would construction duration or cost to perform the work change?

  4. If equipment staging areas are allowed on the bridge deck by closing one lane of traffic, what is the minimum width of staging area that would be required?

  5. If “top down” construction, where access from the bridge deck is required in the contract, what industry limitations should we consider? Examples might be deck staging areas, staging areas at the ends of the structure, distance of work from staging areas, etc.

  6. Are there other considerations or capabilities we should consider when designing the plans and specifications for this project?

Please submit all respsonses and inquiries to the following: wfl.contracts@dot.gov 360-619-7520.When responding, please reference the above project number.

Thank you for taking the time to discuss your firms capabilities and preferences with us.
